Depression and Relaxation Techniques by Dr. Vikrama

Many of the relaxation techniques are popular that remove the knots of muscular tension from our body. Recent researches show that chronic pain such as tension headache, chronic low backache result from mental stress, bad posture, lack of exercise and multiple micro tension knots in muscles along the spine.

Most of the strength training exercises that we do in gym or practice at home with weights and bench presses offer benefit for a specific set of muscles. We need to relax these small muscles as well.

The Shavasana or Corpse posture of Yoga is a perfect exercise for self-relaxation. Its practice can be done in the morning or evening. It helps us get rid of physical stress and produces a calm state of mind.

In the practice of Corpse posture, we lie down and then gradually tense and relax the body parts. The body is divided arbitrarily in several parts. The tension and relaxation cycle is repeated several times for each part.

Thereafter, this exercise is coupled with breathing awareness, visualization or affirmation according to the temperament of the practitioner. Its effects are evident right from the first day.

The western scientific ‘Progressive Self-Relaxation’ exercise is highly influenced by the practice of corpse posture. However the lead scientists profess that they are not influenced by any exercise or any tradition or spiritual practice. However, even the novice yoga practitioners can be found to practice all the elements of this practice.

Relaxation exercises redirect the mind to body and outside world from the pulpit of negative thoughts and emotions of depression sufferer. And they have their own physiological and psychological benefits.
